Carrot and stick

Here in the Philippines, the president is hated by the rural poor and the left.

However, it is planting season, and since despite all the voting fraud the "loyal opposition" won a majority of seats in congress, so things are quiet.

A bunch of wacko leftists came here to "protest" the "political killings". Actually there have been quite a few leftist clergy killed by, unknown parties, peasants harassed, and reporters killed for exposing corruption. But there also have been a lot of barangay captains and police killed by the NPA or drug runners connected with the NPA (Communists) not to mention feuds between political families.

Our nephew was killed in the crossfire of one such feud, and of course his killers have never been found, or rather the shooter but not the one who paid for the killing has been found.

The latest government tightrope is trying to allow the Marine payback on those who attacked and killed and mutilated 14 marines on Basilan Island.

If the president doesn't allow payback, the military will be angry, but if she goes too far, she will anger the MILF, who has been busy spinning one version after another to justify the atrocity.

And it doesn't help the MILF spinfactory and their enablers that the attack was filmed by a local
news crew and has already been televised.

Yet no one wants the Luzon "sleeper cells" to start lobbing granades or worse at next week's ASEAN summit, so things are in a chess game mode.

The marines are put into place on Basilan and other MILF strongholds.

The MILF can "investigate" with the help of Mal.ysia and the government to figure out the "real" story, giving time for the Asean summit, which includes Muslim countries like Indonesia and Malaysia to save face.

The army can put their resources in watching for troublemakers in Manila.

And the names of those who did the atrocity have been released to both the MILF and the public.

The pieces are set, and it's just a matter of time.

The bad news is that the rumor is that the Italians paid thru the nose to get back the Italian priest.
They deny paying ransom, but the last italian priest also was "released without paying ransom" according to his order's website, but a quick google showed a news story about how the intermediary stole the 80 thousand Euro payment for the priest.

And you notice that this was the third Italian priest kidnapped by the MILF. One local wag suggested the MILF must like Pizza. But of course the dirty little secret is that if you steal an Italian, you get money.

You kidnap an American Baptist you get the US Special forces helping the Philippine Marines to blow you away during the rescue.

Makes sense to me.

China and Pakistan

One thing that hasn't been mentioned about Pakistan's "meltdown" (if you believe NBC) is that alot of the recent problems, including the attack on the Red Mosque, is not due to the evilbushyhitler, but from China.

The students from the "red mosque" attacked and "arrested" some chinese, including some women working at a "health" clinic, aka bordello.

There also have been a few car bombs and attacks on Chinese workers.
China has a problem with nationalistic tendencies in their North west where many Muslims live. Alas, Saudi funded mosques have re inflamed the problem as attack against Islam, when what actually is happening is that the Han majority moved in (40 percent of the population) and is exploiting the resources.
But like Chinese everywhere, they tend to be harder working, richer, and clannish.

China's need for mineral and oil resources in Africa has garnered some attention, but few noticed China hitting terrorist training camps near the Pakistani border, or the joint military exercizes with Pakistan, or that Pakistan's special forces are being trained by the Chinese.

China is extending their political and economic influence not only in the SIberian Russia but into the ex USSR republics that span the old silk road.

So if one sees "The Great Game", the newest player is China rising.

This is bad news for local terrorists, whose luddite tendencies and meddling in China's NW territory is unwelcome;
However, it is not necessarily good news for the US. For China will always put China first. And they plan to overtake the US economically and politically by 2020.

North Korea shuts down five nuclear plants

Last weekend, reports that North Korea has shut down it's largest nuclear plant was ignored or shrugged off by the MSM.


Now the UN inspectors report five nuclear reactors have  been shut down.

It's Bush's fault

North Korea shuts down reactor, MSM yawns

After 15 years of negotiations, North Korea is shutting off one of their nuclear reactors.

MSM yawns or ignores the breakthru.
The reason this occurred is because the Bush administration pressured Chinese banks to stop working with them, but the thing that really pressured the government was that Kim's personal funds i(and the personal funds of other high govt officials) in a Macao bank was frozen. The money frozen was only 25 million but when it means you can't buy drugs, luxuries for your bimbos, or keep you kids living in luxury it sort of hits home.

When Bush did this, few noted it upset the NK gov't, although a few papers criticized Bush for making them mad. But now that it's working, ah hear the sounds of silence.

Philippine marines beheaded

Marines killed in the Philippines..

.they were looking for an Italian priest, and had evidence that he had been kidnapped by the Abusayyaf.
So following AbuSayyaf group kidnappers into the jungles, they were ambushed. The MILF claims they "broke the truce" by entering MILF territory which is nonsense, since it was hot pursuit and the border of the area covered with the truce is vague.

It seems that  when they neared an MILF camp, the ASG told the local MILF that the marines were there to attack them, so the MILF joined the fight. Essentially a score of Pinoy Marines ended up surrounded by a couple hundred MILF guys, and lost.


The Italians have been pressuring the Philippine government to "negotiate" i.e. pay lots of money to get back an Italian priest kidnapped for ransom.

StrategyPage says that with the MILF making peace with the government, they can't pay their bills so some of the guys went back into kinapping. But the Phillppine government is afraid if they start getting ransom, they will just keep doing it...and there are a lot of businesspeople mainly Christians in the area. If the Gov't allows them to get away with it, they won't be able to attract business, not to mention that it will allow the MILF to go back to terrorizing people.

The Marines were beheaded, which was done to terrorize people. But it might not work. The last group kidnapped was a bunch of road workers, and when the ransom didn't come but the Philippine Miliatary came and started to flush them out, the kidnappers just beheaded the entire road crew and left their bodies.

This type of thing may not work in the Philippines, where life and death is "Bahala na" and there is a macho side to this easy going culture.

. The good news is that the main ASG head was hurt and his son killed in the fight, and although ABSCBN showed the Muslims complaining the marines broke the truce by trespassing, one suspects they are trying to get publicity so they can avoid payback.

Are Americans nuts

Every news story spins negative to Bush or to the wars.
Yet other stories show that the Taliban is shooting up girls who dare to attend school in Afghanistan, and that the suicide bombers are hitting innocent women and children.
The anti semetic Hamas are allowed to use our papers for propaganda
and the implications of the surrounding of Israel are not discussed.
we only read about each Republican senator that "opposes" the war.
Do you mean ALL democrats oppose the war? Why?
